Update #8 : FAQ

Hello everyone, long time no see 😊
We took a few weeks off because life was kicking us in the ass. It still is.
Things were difficult for a long while. Getting better, hoping for a nice 2022 ^^
So what better way to start the year than by answering some of our most asked questions?

F.A.Q

Updated 2022-02-12

Can I make a let's play or stream of Paper Lily/Project Kat and monetize it?

Yes, of course!

Do you have plans to translate Paper Lily/Project Kat to my language?

For now, we accept fan translations and we regularly add them to this translation post. In the future we're hoping to have official translations for certain languages, but this might be a couple years from now since we don't have the budget for it at the moment.

Will you add achievements for each of the endings in Project Kat on Steam?

Probably not. Our achievements aren't exhaustive because we consider certain endings to be secrets. Having achievements would give those away and spoil the fun of finding them. This doesn't just apply to endings - we consider the achievements to simply be a guide for some of the other things you can try in the game.

How do I delete my save file?

In Windows, your saves are stored in %APPDATA%\Paper Lily\save. Simply delete the "save" folder to erase all your progress. We will add ways to delete individual slots from inside the game in the future.

How do I reset my settings?

In Windows, your settings are stored in %APPDATA%\Paper Lily\engine.cfg. Simply delete this file to reset all your settings. If all you want to reset are your custom controls, you can delete %APPDATA%\Paper Lily\bindings.json.

Why is there no Mac or Linux version on Steam?

Simply put, this would put us in a position of having to give support under operating systems that we're not all that familiar with (we don't even own a Mac, a friend tests it for us!). We will re-evaluate this in the future, as our resources expand. For now, we provide Linux, MacOS and 32-bit Windows builds only on our itch.io page. The Steam and itch.io versions are pretty much identical, so you're not missing out on anything.

Will there be a mobile version of Paper Lily (Android/iOS)?

We didn't consider Paper Lily to be the kind of game that people would enjoy on a phone or tablet, so we designed it with PCs (and maybe consoles) in mind - the game would need some work to be ported to mobile. At the moment, we don't have plans for this. That said, we can always re-evaluate this in the future if there's enough demand.

Why doesn't Project Kat show up in my Steam profile's showcase?

The short answer is: we don't know. As you can see on our store page, Project Kat has been marked as "Profile Features Limited", which is a preventive measure by Steam to deal with certain kinds of abuse. We asked Steam about it, but they're unable to tell us why, or when/if this limitation will be lifted.

Is there/will there be a discord server?

For the moment, there is no "official" discord server. However, you can create or join fan servers if you wish. We know of one currently hosted by Aria and Tegron available here. Please keep in mind that we're not part of this server so we take no responsibility for what goes on there :)

Are you looking to hire programmers/artists/etc?

No

How can I donate/support you?

We're honored that people reached out to us with this question. At the moment we are considering crowdfunding, so we've had itch.io donations disabled to avoid double-dipping. If you wish to support the development, you'll have the opportunity to do so. More on this soon!

Where is Kat? What happened to Kat?? WE WANT KAT!

O-oh.. ok. Here's a cat

Wait.. that doesn't look right...

WHEN WILL CHAPTER 1 BE OUT!?

Wow... Alright, let's tackle this question.

We know it's been quite long since the release of Project Kat, and it's something that weighs heavily on our minds all the time. Despite working whenever we can (given our full-time jobs or studies), sometimes it feels like the game is so large that the pile of tasks never ends.
We had planned to release Chapter 1 by the end of 2021, but several changes have caused it to take longer.

The main reason is that Chapter 1 is much larger than Project Kat and includes some new mechanics that we've never attempted to make before. To give some examples...
PK takes around 45 minutes to beat, and Chapter 1 may reach 3 hours of gameplay.
PK had approximately 2-3 different environments, Chapter 1 will have at least 6 different environments.
PK has 7 CGs, Chapter 1 will have over 15 CGs.

In short, it's a lot more ambitious than we initially planned. Many parts of the chapter are nearly finished from environments to character sprites, to script, but we've avoided posting much of it on our social media to avoid spoilers. Paper Lily: Chapter 1 will deliver a different experience than Project Kat, and much of it comes from the surprise of not knowing what to expect in your adventure.

Another topic we wanted to touch on is funding. Based on our expenses for Project Kat and Chapter 1, we don't think the rest of the game will be able to exist without some sort of funding. We had planned to deliver Chapter 1 at the same time as a crowdfunding campaign (so that people that want to support us know exactly what to expect from the full game). This involves the extra workload of designing and preparing for the campaign. At the moment our best options seem to be Kickstarter or Indiegogo, but if you have some input on this matter feel free to drop a comment.
At the very least, we want to assure you all that we're still working hard on it. We are also working with two amazing composers to deliver the best soundtrack we can. In fact, even if the game sucks, the music will definitely make up for it.
So, to answer the question, we can't answer the question right now. The second we know the approximate release date we'll post about it. All we can say is... Soon.

If you've gotten this far, thank you so much for reading and sticking with us!

Probably not. Our achievements aren't exhaustive because we consider certain endings to be secrets. Having achievements would give those away and spoil the fun of finding them. IIRC, I've played some games on Steam that actually had secret achievements. They usually have different name/description saying its a secret in the game's achievements list. After you obtain/unlock the secret achievement in-game, the achievement's name/description changes to reveal its true name/description.

Do you need QA/Testers? If so, I volunteer. I don't have a life. I cant work just yet (disability issues), and all I really do is my coursework for university. Rest of my days are....a lot of nothing. I'm in my 30s and the boredom is real, y'all.

For fundraising, I've seen most developers use Kickstarter. You could just make the tier at say......$10 or $20 (however much you plan to charge for the game) to have the award of the game for free. Less than that, maybe like a Twitter shoutout or something like that. More than that could be the game + their name in the credits maybe? And super large amounts you would just have to be creative 🤣🤣 like...zoom call dinner date or some oddball thing. Or a Tshirt maybe?

Anyway, if yall need help setting that sort of thing up, hit me up. I haven't seen any donation links yet, and this post was from Jan.

Looking forward to Paper Lily! You two are working super hard and I hope y'all achieve everything you are hoping for.

Thanks for the game, I'm really like all of it.

Take your time! Your game has a lot of potential and I'm excited to see what you can give us on Chapter 1.

(+7)

Please take your time. Life sucks and is hard, but you're making something truly incredible, so make sure it's the best it can be before you release it. I'm looking so forward to playing it and you can absolutely count on my support if/when you get to crowdfunding :)

Kickstarter isn't the most trustworthy of companies imo: https://kotaku.com/kickstarter-announces-blockchain-future-doubles-down-a-184823...

Indiegogo hasn't gone that route from what I can tell which is good, but there's also always patreon to go to (though that is also far from perfect, heard many stories of the platform screwing over users and creators on there).

also, you might not be looking to hire, but what about voulnteers? :P

(+5)

We don't feel like it would be appropriate to accept volunteer work on this kind of project. Ideally, we want to pay anyone who works with us :)

(+2)

Well, playtesters usually aren't paid - the ones who are are QA, not testers aha, so that's always an option if you need some extra help :D

The question is, can anyone even mimic an arstyle I wonder >_>

artists working together on a game doesn't mean "mimicking" the original's style, it's about working together on each others strengths and weaknesses. If that's what you're on about

(1 edit)

Actually that is mimicking, but there's nothing wrong with that, since mimicking artstyles is actually one of the largest things anyone would ask for from a person since they can adjust easily. I would even dare say, I respect mimicking artists because of their prowess at it.

(1 edit)

Yes. Working in a variety of styles and mimicking pre-established styles is a very useful, but underappreciated, skill as a game artist. Some artists have more aptitude for it than others, but like any other art skill, it's something one can learn through careful practice.

While, as skylarkblue1 said, art directors aim to have each artist fill a role according to their strengths without the need for mimicry, it's also not uncommon for games, especially 2D games, to have their look driven by one artist early on, and to require more artists to continue in that style because the original artist can't complete the work quickly enough or has left. While mimicry is rarely perfect, a skilled artist can get close enough that players won't even suspect that multiple artists were involved. This kind of mimicry is probably involved in more games than you might think, especially among visual novels and portrait-heavy RPGs.

Yeah I completely agree, I would even dare say I'd like to talk with a person who can mimic artstyles proficiently than someone who is talented at artstyles/

(-1)

Yes, because listen to Kotaku... the most reliable people lol

There are many other sources for it, kotaku aren't the onion. They have linked many direct sources to kickstarter's blog posts in the article if you had read it.
