Interesting, I actually like this better than the Prologue. I preferred the details and alternatives you could do in Chapter 1, and didn't really like the limitations in the Prologue.
I have to say, the moment I came across Project Kat I've been heavily invested in the story. This game definitely did not disappoint! Both forms of art, pixel art and drawings, were incredible. (I couldn't help but smile watching the small animation of Hiro ruffling Lacie's hair) I love the subtle ties back to Project Kat, and hints at the stories further mixing in the future. However, since this game is a demo, I'd like to give the most detailed feedback I can so the end game can be as polished as possible.
**Spoilers from this point onwards**
Firstly: Minor bugs. The first thing I noticed is in Miss Knives' house. When you complete various tasks for the plants, one of the plants requests water. I brought back the water for the plant, but Lacie watered the plant that had requested alcohol instead. Very minor, but I thought it was worth mentioning. Another bug I found was when you remove the golden eye from the painting of the girl. When she chased me, she froze in place and began glitching, allowing me to escape without a chase. (Before this, she had chased me several times without issue, so I'm not really sure what the problem was)
Second: Critiques and ideas. The only major thing I want to address is the shadowy figures in the abandoned facility. They were nearly impossible to avoid. I understand their purpose in attempting to shepherd the player to the unguarded elevator, but I feel that if the creatures were made more abundant and slower, it would be more of a challenge while not seeming impossible. Because they moved so quickly, my original impression was that I didn't have all the fuses I needed, and it was meant to be impossible because I was doing it wrong, forcing me to look up a video and discover I was right initially. This was very frustrating, and I hope it will be done differently in the final game.
I'm definitely not the first one to point out the difficulty of the spikes minigame and the Miss Knives minigame. It definitely caught me off guard a bit, since there was no battle mechanic in Project Kat, but I found that I really enjoyed it! It really added an extra layer to the gameplay and an element of challenge. Admittedly though, I do wish the battling had been used more often to truly build-up to the fight with Miss Knives. Though clicking to dodge is fairly self-explanatory, a progression of difficulty would have definitely made completing the Miss Knives battle that much more satisfying. As I mentioned before, though, it is very difficult. I can imagine there being a large portion of fans who prefer the puzzle aspects and story of the game to the combat. This could be fixed with the option of a story mode, which skips over the battles to focus more on the puzzles. Of course, I'm not much of a game developer, so I have no idea how difficult that would be to execute, I just thought I would propose the suggestion.
To summarize: The art was beautiful. The unique aspect of branching paths remained as interesting in this game as in its predecessor. The new addition of battles was interesting, and I hope they continue in future chapters. The story still continues to draw me in, and I look forward to seeing how it grows.
If you're reading this creators: I'll make sure to fill out the Google Form as well for your convenience :) Great work!
Is going through the locked gate the only path available in the demo? still haven't been able to find the blue light or where to use some items like the stone curse cure
flowers (from the sculpture guy). use potato chips on him first if he's still chasing you. then you can use the flowers on the chemistry set with the rest of the items
the sculpture guy (after you give him potato chips). you have to leave and come back to talk to him. ask him everything and he'll keep dropping flowers (up to 3 i believe)
what a ride! the wait was worth it. i didnt encounter any issues on my almost 6 hour playthrough but im definitelly gonna replay it. you guys take a rest, you deserve it
This is the post edit of my game around which took me around 5 hrs gameplay lol and lowers to 2 hrs long and i'm gonna say that THIS GAME IS AMAZINGGGG!!! I'm totally in love with it, the story the character build the humor the puzzles and the multiple ways to achieve those are very beautiful! , it makes use of player creativity from start to finish and I LOVE IT!
it's does feel like an omori experience sometimes and it just felt great!, i don't want to spoil much in the comment but I can't wait to see how other ppl approaches the puzzle and react to the spookyness, I still amazed by how you can make a 2d game very scary :D
EVERY EPIC/10
Critique(more like correction):
Btw there's a item naming error on timestamp 1:10:59 (I think it suppose to be Bucket and Not Paddle )
finally, this game arrived and i can't wait to see more.
talking about the project, so both games, you have done a majestic work so far! it's incredible how much dedicated you are to this. well, it's also inspirng, i admit.
about Paper Lily ch. 1 i have some things to say. first, the game is FUCKING GOOD, in almost every aspect (some bug to be fixed, but you have plent of time). it's not the same atmosphere of Project Kat...and i loved it! i mean, Project Kat is a beatifully done horror game but this one, oh boy. This game is a perfect balance between mystery, comic and horror, an absolute must have in my opinion. i don't get why some are complaining about the spikes or the "boss fight" cause to me was a good thing adding new gameplay (without it, would have been still beautiful but with less variety); the difficult, for me, wasn't even that high, even for the chase, but i guess it's just me (just kidding, i am lucky ahah). you have to fix the shadows that instakill you cause, sometimes, they get in ur wa without giving you the possibility to avoid them.
in conclusion, well done and i will wait for the multi-endings version (and for the next chapter, of course)! 9/10
p.s. WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO KAT, YOU MONSTERS?!?!?!
I've been looking forward to this game for a really long time and I am completely devastated because I cannot beat the MIss Knives mini-game section. I have tried upwards of 60 times at this point and I cannot beat that section. Others seem to have completed it so maybe I am just terrible at games but it's so sad because I really wanted to finish this game.
This. While I had fun with the Miss Knives minigame part, I notice it did demand a lot and I hope something in that part changes so less skilled players don't get stuck forever
Yeah, that would be good. I simply have a hard time with motor functions in general and even though the game has been amazing I think I have to give up.
Hi there! We're currently fixing this, sorry for the trouble you both had! Our testing hadn't shown this issue so we didn't expect people to have trouble with it. We should have another version up in a couple of days! In the meanwhile, just in case it helps, drinking the rainbow liquid item and having Sai in your party gives you 3 total HP rather than the initial 1 HP.
(But make sure you are playing with version 1.0.1 or above)
Thank you for caring about what we have to say, it must be stressful only being two people but you are doing amazing and I'm so glad I get to even play it in the first place. <3
Es hermoso como han elaborado esta obra maestra, adoro cada aspecto y aún ni complete todo. Espero a futuro tenga una traducción al Español como el Project Kat. Gracias por el juegazo. <3 This game is amazing, I love how the story is going, and I haven't finished it yet... I hope that in the future the game will have a Spanish translation like Project Kat. Thenks for make this game. <3 I'll wait for this game on Steam.
Loving the game so far. The Gameplay is entertaining even for those who don't like horror\scary games. Project Kat is a must have as prologue. Having trouble at train station and gate, will see will I survive:-|
When it launches in full can assist with the translations :)
The game is fantastic and love finding the ways to cheat through and try to find solutions to get a better time. You must first be a completionist in order to know the fastest ways to finish the game. Also there are 15 coins in the game I found so far, I need them coins!!!
I played Project Kat so I was really excited to pay Chapter One. There were a lot of things I really liked about the game-- the main character is solid and has good motivation, great character design, perfectly spooky areas, and solid puzzles (I still love the mechanic of there being multiple ways to solve every puzzle). However, the area with the elevator.. I didn't have a good time. I thought the game was glitched because a monster kept jumpscaring and insta-killing me.
One of the things I liked about Project Kat is though there was no real chase or monster to contend with, there was still a deep sense of foreboding, knowing something bad was going to happen, that made it good horror. Jumpscares personally stress me out and I think it ruined the experience of Paper Lily for me. I ended up handing the computer off to my partner, who got so infuriated at the constant insta-deaths that they just brought up the pause menu over and over to prevent any monster spawns, which they found to take away from the game experience that they had previously enjoyed experiencing with me. I ended up quitting the game during the Miss Knives sequence at the painting, which, while really well done, I saw the painting, figured it was an Ib reference, handed it off to my partner, saw the chase a la Witch's House, and decided this was a bit too out of my league. I'll watch someone's playthrough on Youtube just to see what happens. There were a few moments I really wanted to replay because I saw things I had missed online or on the Discord server, like certain interactions or secrets, but specifically the elevator section just completely kept me from wanting to play the game again or even finish it.
Ever since Project Kat came out, I've been waiting to play Paper Lily! It felt like a right amount of content for a demo, and the visuals and soundtrack are absolutely gorgeous. I appreciate the new group of characters that we're introduced to, especially Rune and how they're spaced out when they appear.
The last part of the demo in Miss Knives' area was uncharacteristically more difficult than expected in regards to puzzle-solving and the boss fight. I wish that there other times in the demo where there'd be something like the spike challenges to practice dodging to prep against the boss. Or perhaps two more extra lives or maybe notching down the difficulty a bit to make the overall experience much smoother.
It does feel like the tone has changed slightly between Project Kat and Paper Lily as Project Kat had more horror than this game. (I do wish there was more horror and unsettling moments, but that's my own personal preference!) Although that's not a bad thing for the tone to change since we have a new protagonist and a new perspective.
As Lacie, we get to explore and adventure in a fantastical world and eventually unpack her dark past rather than staying in the school with Kat most of the time. I think once the multiple endings and a few more secrets are updated, it'll be on par with Project Kat's tone and horror aspects of the game. Right now it feels more like an adventure with horror and tragic moments, but again it is a demo/chapter 1 (things are likely to change) and only the beginning to Lacie's story.
Thank you so much for creating Paper Lily; I've enjoyed playing it immensely! This was such a great experience, and you can feel all the love this game has in it. It's a fantastic little gem. I can't wait to support the Kickstarter when it comes out!!
I don't know if this was done on purpose but this just feels tonally .... off? compared to the prologue. It reminded me more of games like Undertale or OneShot where you just have this large zany cast of characters in a super vast, bright world. Which again, is fine, but there doesn't really seem to be a balance between this and the horror segments, and it's often times very hard to take the game seriously when it wants to be.
tbh i think that was just you? the reason it has a different tone to the prologue is the setting. paper lily has a variety of settings, but project kat is set in a dimly lit and empty school, and an even more empty other dimension.
I don't really think its the environments. there are plenty of good environments in this game they just never let it rock long enough for it to mean anything before shuffling you onto the next thing. Like the whole illusion house segment is great but then just tossing you into a weird bullet hell sort of gimmick to climax the whole thing brought it down too much IMO. There were so many instances where I was thinking "That can't be right" because everything was over right after it just started picking up.
Just finished it, super fun to go trough and really engaging I would say that the forest chase sequence is a bit too hard though, but other than that, really great
In 2021 I randomly found Project Kat and instantly was amazed by it's storytelling and freedom of gameplay.
I've been waiting like everyone for Paper Lily, and now after finally playing I can say I am extremely excited for this game and it's future.
Presentation wise, this game knocks it out of the park in every aspect. Art, music, world building are all super engaging, and are the thing that keep me playing. The exploration is so much fun, the amount of detail put into the work is crazy. The fact that almost every item can be interacted with is a feat.
I have a few gripes, mainly with the combat. While they are few, they are incredible difficulty spikes that threw me out of the atmosphere and cause a lot of frustration for me personally. I felt if there were more combat sections that got progressively harder, it wouldn't have been such a shock.
Just me personally the combat felt like a bit of an afterthought. As if there wasn't confidence that the core gameplay would have enough engagement, which I highly disagree with. The core exploration and puzzle solving is what makes the game for me.
Other than that though, I have thoroughly enjoyed this game and I'm excited to see what updates it receives, as well as future chapters.
For a noob like me I would humbly suggest a 'Peaceful' or 'Pacifist' mode. But don't allow these to detract from the story.
Thank you for this amazing game. I hope this feedback was of some helpfulness.
I agree that the difficulty was unexpected, but it was a nice heart racer contrasted with the puzzle sections! I both suffered and loved the final battle even if I too am a combat noob.
This is my first time playing Leef 6010 and I haven't played project kat yet, but this game is making me want to play it next after I'm done with the paper lily demo. Looking forward to the full game and project kat.
thanks @leef6010 for making a great game
I haven't finished this demo but this is my gameplay if anyone is interested in watching it. Please consider liking and subscribing if you enjoyed this video. Thanks!
For anyone on MacOS encountering an issue trying to open the game, I managed to fix that by typing "xattr -cr ./Paper\ Lily\ Demo.app" in the terminal app.
I played the first hour of the game, and I love where the story is going so far. Not gonna spoil too much of the game, but I like how they kept the same story elements from the last game. It brought nostalgia from two years ago when I was playing Project Kat. I can't wait for the dev team to put their absolute best in the other chapters. Its gonna be like waiting for another deltarune chapter again, HAHA. Thank you for a good game Leef!
Don't know if I'm the only one, but when loading the save file I have from Project Kat it gives me an infinite loading screen. Everything is fine if I select new game though.
Either way I'm really excited for this first chapter! I still have to play it so currently I can't say anything about the game itself, but my expectations are high!
So far so great! It's like Tim Burton meets Studio Ghibli. I normally don't like these kind of games but ever since Project Kat, I've been a huge fan. I haven't witnessed any bugs so far. You can see my experience and feedback through the video I recorded:
The game took me about 3 or so hours to complete and was overall really fun. I encountered only a few minor bugs such as a monster killing me immediately after leaving a door but when i went through it another time the monster wasn't even in the room? (It was the room next to the elevator on BF1 after turning off the lights) and another one was a plant whose requirement I've already fulfilled kept still asking for alcohol, so i wasn't sure if i did something wrong. But these bugs aren't anything egregious which would render the game unplayable, just slightly frustrating at most.
I like the story and the overall vibe of the game, so the initial impressions are great, but i usually start objectively looking at a game only after some time has passed and I've thought about it more so i might write a follow up later.
Also some tiny gripes about the game are:
Why are there traps on a completely blank wooden walkway??? (this one just didn't make much sense although doesn't really matter.) Whats the point of the coins? I managed to find quite a few and besides getting chips and a machine eating my coin i haven't really found a use for them? Maybe i just missed it as I've only done one playthrough, or they're going to be used more in future chapters. I really liked the "maze" section but the gate you're supposed to go through to finish off the section at first seemed like just the continuation of the fence? I got stuck there and went through all the other possible routes(at least i found all the coins) just to end up going back there again and only then realizing that I'm supposed to interact with the gate. Maybe some other things dunno i forgot.
I hope if the kickstarter is funded that they release the rest of the game as a whole since having to play it chapter by chapter makes me forget the details which i wouldn't mind as much in a game that has a linear story with one ending but with this i kind of do.
I'm not entirely sure why the kickstarter isn't yet up since I assume more people would donate off the bat due to the excitement of the release of chapter 1 rather than later. Hopefully the full version of chapter 1 will be released soon as well since I'd love to explore the other possible endings and outcomes, i assume the random game ends i sometimes got were blocked off endings.
!!SPOILER WARNING FOR ANYONE WHO DIDNT FINISH IT YET!! i finished this an hour ago or so, i love it! so worth the wait. kat there was really unexpected, part of me was expecting her to be miss knives but that theory made less and less sense as i progressed. i really hope we get to see more of her and iris, and of course the moth sisters and rune. i love all of these characters sm
I have to go to work but im 2.5 hours in and really liking it! There was a couple small bugs and weird things you would expect from v1.0.0, but overall there is amazing polish and I'm excited to continue to play (and support your Kickstarter whichever direction you decide to go)

Got bored at the spike minigame.
Loved project kat but this one feels a worse version of it in general.
sadly it's true:(

Can I have a Chinese translation,Because I really need it, please(*^ω^*)

(minor early game spoilers)
Is going through the locked gate the only path available in the demo? still haven't been able to find the blue light or where to use some items like the stone curse cure
There are alternatives I will say that.
thanks, that's all i needed to know :D
Where did you find an artists inspiration??
flowers (from the sculpture guy). use potato chips on him first if he's still chasing you. then you can use the flowers on the chemistry set with the rest of the items
How do you get the flowers?
I cant get them for some reason
the sculpture guy (after you give him potato chips). you have to leave and come back to talk to him. ask him everything and he'll keep dropping flowers (up to 3 i believe)
use the potion at the candle statue
ohhh ty
I accidentally destroyed it getting the candle so will try again :P
how do I use blue light?
have you already inspected the carpet in the house where you made the potion?
yes but i dont have the key to open the lock
did you find the blue light yet? because I´m out of ideas...
1 get a coin
2 buy a potato chip from the vending machine
3 feed the potato chip to the npc at the art gallery
4 get flowers from the npc
5 make a stone curse cure
6 use it at the candle statue
7 get blue light
thank you so much ^^
how did u get dat red lipstick shaped thingy?!
it's really early on in one of the bathrooms at the house
what a ride! the wait was worth it. i didnt encounter any issues on my almost 6 hour playthrough but im definitelly gonna replay it. you guys take a rest, you deserve it
Just a tip for anyone stuck on Miss Knives- pay attention to your tile and the music. It aligns with the attacks.

hello! Is there a way to transfer save files from previous version to 1.0.2?
The saves are transferred automatically! If you launch 1.0.2 your saves should appear there ^^
Good horror RPG game! I like the arts & the story. I finished this game more than five hours lol. wish you enjoy my gameplay. :)

El juego me encantó asta ahora. Para alguien no juego mucho de este tipo de juego, es bastante entretenido.
El juego tendrá traducción a futuro?, ya que es un poco molesto traducir y estar pendiente de lo que pasa.

IT'S HEREE
Just finished it, super fun to go trough and really engaging
I would say that the forest chase sequence is a bit too hard though, but other than that, really great
It wasn't too bad as long as you wear headphones. You can hear the monster coming. I never got caught.
Took me 4 hours and 15 mins to finished the game
Overall like the game will wait for more
The boss fight is very nice
Here some complains tho:
After you talk to spider there is a loud sound that plays and it is very very loud
The spike timing is very unforgiving
The ghost lady is very fast, had to look up another person playthrough just to make sure im not crazy and this is the intended way
Found a bug here had to reload save
Aparecerá ese héroe que tradujo los textos al español como en Project??
I think even just a few more hearts would defo help.
Thanks!
how do i fill up the bird feeder?
Select the seeds from inventory.
The game was awesome <3
Initial Review
(this one just didn't make much sense although doesn't really matter.)
Whats the point of the coins?
Finally, its here!
I have to go to work but im 2.5 hours in and really liking it! There was a couple small bugs and weird things you would expect from v1.0.0, but overall there is amazing polish and I'm excited to continue to play (and support your Kickstarter whichever direction you decide to go)
